// Behind the scenes. A photo and the story behind it!

Yesterday I photographed Kayli, a New York fashion model. The story began two days earlier with the Bill Murray video I had posted on Instagram. She saw it and wrote to me because she was currently building her portfolio. She was contacting New York photographers whose style she liked and asking each of them to create one image of her in a natural environment. She did not want to spend money on the process.

Yesterday I photographed Mikayla, a 21-year-old American citizen who wants to become a professional dancer and model. She has lived away from home in student accommodation since she was fifteen and will finish her studies next year. Before any photo shoot, I always talk with the person in front of my camera — and for me, anyone who steps in front of my camera is a model. One of my favourite places to photograph here in New York is the High Line. The atmosphere actually reminds me a little of Budapest. But what makes it so interesting, and what exactly is it? It is located in Chelsea, Manhattan, along the Hudson River. An old elevated railway line was transformed into a pedestrian park.

I will try to put into words, from my own point of view, an increasingly common question. As digital technology develops at enormous speed, image-making tools have become accessible to almost everyone. Countless people create photographs every day — sometimes through conscious composition, more often instinctively. Photography is a beautiful hobby because images allow us to preserve emotions, thoughts and impressions and share them with other people.

You can find the details of the event here. Fashion shapes everyday life. Some people follow it, some create it, and some could not care less. New York has plenty of all three. Last year, I happened to be dressed unusually “normally” by my standards when a professional photographer photographed me in the street. His girlfriend approached me afterwards because they liked the image so much that they wanted permission to use it — and offered to send it to me too.

Photography, like every profession, is full of challenges because everything has to come together perfectly in a particular moment. One of the most important tools a photographer has is light.
