The High Line – A Paradise for Professional Photographers!

One of my favourite places to photograph here in New York is the High Line.

The atmosphere actually reminds me a little of Budapest.

But what makes it so interesting, and what exactly is it?

It is located in Chelsea, Manhattan, along the Hudson River.

An old elevated railway line was transformed into a pedestrian park.

The surrounding area used to be an industrial district, but during its regeneration it was reimagined and turned into one of New York’s most expensive neighbourhoods.

What makes it particularly interesting is that many of the old loft-style architectural elements were preserved and combined with modern solutions.

One place I definitely recommend visiting is Chelsea Market.

It is not elevated above street level like the High Line.

Instead, an old factory building was converted into a market and public space.

As you can see below, at the moment it is dressed for Halloween.

Let’s return to the High Line.

I began this article by saying that it is an exceptionally good photography location.

But in truth, it is also perfect for simply relaxing.

It is full of small hidden places where people can do more than scroll on their phones.

You can talk.

Read a book.

There are covered sections too.

And the view across the river toward New Jersey can be beautiful, especially around sunset.

This part of New York also has one of the city’s highest concentrations of art galleries.

If I ever open a studio here, I would almost certainly want it in this area.

Although I should add that there are already close to fifty photography studios around here.

I tried to show the location both during the day and at night through the photographs above.

But I have not yet explained why this roughly one-kilometre-long area works so well for me as a photography location.

Perfect photographs need great light.

Of course, that often depends on the weather.

If you have the right lighting equipment, you can usually solve the problem.

But here, you often do not need any special flash or reflector at all.

The location itself offers an enormous range of possibilities through natural light and shadow.

From a photographic point of view, you can create a strong portfolio here at almost any time of day.
