As a photographer, I am constantly exploring new ideas, and this time I feel I have found something that not only reignited my own creativity, but had a surprisingly deep effect on my models as well. Tired of photographs that are technically razor-sharp, with a histogram shaped like the perfect bell curve, yet somehow have all the emotional appeal of reheated pizza? Welcome to the club. Most photographers go through a “pixel-perfect but soulless” phase. The good news: there is a way out.

Today, when someone says “fake it till you make it”, we barely blink — every second Silicon Valley founder knows the drill. But imagine doing it in the 1930s, before Photoshop gave anyone a place to hide. There was a young man from Városház Street in Budapest who not only helped invent modern war photography, but also pulled off one of the greatest marketing bluffs in history. He was Robert Capa. Well, not exactly. He was Endre Ernő Friedmann, the son of a tailor.

Imagine spending decades living in children's rooms, wiping other people's runny noses, while secretly creating one of the most brilliant photographic bodies of work of the 20th century. This is not the synopsis of a Netflix series. It was Vivian Maier's reality. Vivian was a genuine mystery: a gruff nanny who wore men's shoes and spoke with a French accent — despite being born in New York — and who never showed her photographs to anyone.
