Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune condition. It is not contagious, although many people still believe it is. Its development is influenced by an inherited predisposition as well as environmental and triggering factors. My first symptoms appeared around 2007: small patches on my scalp and around my navel. When they gradually became worse, I went to a doctor. Nothing much happened — I was given one or two creams and that was considered the matter closed.

And I was only twenty years old.

I couldn't do sport, which meant losing the very thing that had powered my life. My waist-length hair had to be cut shorter and shorter, something that affected me deeply as a woman because I had never had short hair before.

It had to be cut so that the daily treatment could be applied to my scalp more easily. By this point I had completely lost hope that things would ever improve. The feeling that nobody could help caused indescribable emotional pain, and the psychological strain only made my physical condition worse.

Thanks to a very dear friend who refused to accept that this was simply how my life had to be, we managed to get an appointment at the psoriasis outpatient clinic in Szeged. By then, even putting on a T-shirt was a challenge without steroids and strong pain medication. I finally reached Szeged in early 2009, and because of the severity of the disease and the involvement of my nails, I spent a week there undergoing the necessary examinations.

Once the tests were completed, the doctors started the appropriate treatments. The change wasn't immediate, of course, but slowly things began to improve. The joint pain eased, the skin symptoms started to recede, and my nails recovered very gradually.

Psoriasis is not only a physical condition. It can also be an enormous emotional challenge to process the fact that suddenly you can no longer do things you once did without thinking. Building new relationships becomes difficult, and existing relationships are tested as well.

After the team in Szeged began treating me with biological therapy, I looked better month by month.

It wasn't only my body that began to heal. My soul did too.

My friends practically took me to every training session. They came to pick me up, helped me get dressed, drove me to the sports hall, and even if I could only sit in the stands, I could still be there with them. That meant more to me than I can describe. They were waiting for me to return to the court almost as much as I was.

I wanted to tell my story because if, through it, I can become a friend, teammate or family member to even one woman or man living with psoriasis — someone who takes their hand and helps them through a difficult, exhausting period — then putting it into words was already worth it.
