There Is No Bad Model, Only a Bad Photographer

Let me state this clearly:

There is no such thing as a bad model.

There is only a photographer who fails to see that person's beauty.

After all, it is always the photographer who decides which part of what they see will be shown.

But how does photography actually work?

I will try to explain it through a mental image.

It requires a little imagination, but I think it will work. ;)

First, we need a model.

Imagine that the model is a forest or a meadow.

Their current mood is the weather.

Now imagine a photographer standing inside a house in the middle of that forest or meadow.

The house has no windows.

Only one door.

And inside the building is you.

You have created your own small world there.

If it is orderly, it is orderly.

If it is chaotic, it is chaotic.

That interior reflects your current emotional world.

Even though the meadow surrounds you, you cannot truly see it.

You see only what is inside the house and whatever part of the outside world appears through the doorway.

Most people photograph the world from this position.

From the perspective of their own inner world.

If you think about it, your vision is limited.

The frame of the door creates boundaries.

These are the conscious creators who keep a safe emotional distance from the subject.

They observe without becoming deeply involved and always present the world through their own point of view.

But to truly communicate what exists outside, you have to step out of the house.

You have to move away from safety and into uncertainty.

And when you do, the world opens.

You feel the breeze against your skin.

You smell the flowers.

You feel the softness of the grass beneath your feet.

Every direction offers a different world.

If the sky suddenly opens, you get wet.

But you also know you will eventually dry.

At that point you can create an image that affects the viewer in the same way the situation affects you.

You have stepped into the world of the subject.

Now you can show directly what you feel.

A good photographer is good because they allow the subject to affect them.

They let themselves be carried by it.

Then, like clear glass, they pass forward what is happening without unnecessary distortion.

That is probably how I would describe what makes a good photographer good.

The very best photographers are often the ones who are not trying to “be photographers” at all.

They simply exist.

They see with their soul and help others see through it.

Day after day, through their way of seeing, they leave something genuinely valuable for future generations.
